ISO 8217 Specifications for Marine Residual Fuels

These ISO specifications are provided for information. For guaranteed and typical specifications in the port you require fuel, please contact your CGMP representative.

Table 1: Requirements for Marine Residual Fuels 2005

Table 2: Requirements for Marine Distillate Fuels 2005

Important Changes

  1. Maximum density of the lower residual fuel grades has been lowered.  RMD 80 is now 980 kg/m3 versus 985 for the old RMD 15, RMB 30 is now 975 kg/m3 vs. 981 for the old RMB 10 and RMA 30 is now 960 kg/m3 vs. 975 for the old RMA 10.
  1. The viscosity of the residual fuels is expressed as viscosity @ 50 °C; fuel categories now included are RMA and RMB 30, RMD 80, RME and RMF 180, RMG RMH RMK 380 and RMH RMK 700.
  1. The max water content for all residual grades is set at 0.5 v% max.
  1. The max sulfur content for 180 Cst and grades above is 4.5 m%, in line with the MARPOL global sulfur cap.
  1. For both distillate and residual grades, there is a requirement on the presence of used lubricating oil.  A product shall be considered to be free of ULO if one or more of the elements Zn, P and Ca are below or at the limits (respectively 15,15,30 mg/kg).  Or all three elements shall exceed those limits before a fuel shall be considered to contain ULO.
  1. For DMB type marine diesel oil, a total sediment existent limit of 0.10 m/m % is in place.  However, if the clarity of DMB category products affords visual inspection, and if they appear free from visible sediment and water, testing for total sediment existent and for water is not required.
  1. The standard includes also several informative annexes on e.g. Na and V, ignition quality, precision and interpretation of test results, ULO in marine fuels and acidity.
